ON Semiconductor has announced two new boards (shielded boards) that further extend the capabilities of its recently released Internet of Things (loT) Development Kit (IDK) platform. With the introduction of these two new shielding panels with Bluetooth low power technology and Smart passive sensors (SPS), customers can now create a wide variety of unique use cases for smart home/building, smart city, industrial automation and mobile health applications.

     ON Semiconductor has announced two new boards (shielded boards) that further extend the capabilities of its recently released Internet of Things (loT) Development Kit (IDK) platform. With the introduction of these two new shielding panels with Bluetooth low power technology and Smart passive sensors (SPS), customers can now create a wide variety of unique use cases for smart home/building, smart city, industrial automation and mobile health applications.

     The Bluetooth Low Power Shield is equipped with the recently launched and Bluetooth 5 certified RSL10 multi-protocol Radio System single-chip (SoC). With the industry's lowest deep sleep current and receive power consumption, the RSL10 helps manufacturers build IoT devices with longer battery life. Moreover, the RSL10's compact size facilitates the ultra-compact, cost-effective endpoint design required for low-power IoT sensor networks. By integrating Bluetooth low-power shielding panels with IDK, customers get complementary connectivity options that expand connectivity, sensing and actuator options, including lighting and motors.

     The SPS shield extends the functionality of the IDK, enabling it to capture measurement temperature, humidity and pressure data from On Semiconductor's battery-free SPS sensors. These sensors are ideal for industrial and other applications that are difficult to access but require monitoring. Sensors for these applications must have zero maintenance characteristics, and battery replacement is also a challenge. Pairing SPS shields with IDKs enables rapid prototyping of IoT applications that require battery-free sensing, wide-area or local connectivity, and actuation options.

     The two new shielding panels expand IDK's options for configurable modularity in sensing, actuating, and wired/wireless connectivity, providing application designers with full flexibility without knowing the communication protocol of choice. Because the application mask offers an out-of-the-box solution, developers can quickly and easily start projects and be able to send data directly to the cloud for value-added services, including analytics.

     IDK shielding boards are equipped with complete documentation, including complete design circuit diagrams, board wiring and Gerber files to speed up the connection of the different stages of design from concept and development to production. The industry-standard interface ensures that current and future modules from ON Semiconductor and other suppliers can be seamlessly integrated into designs, allowing end product design to be completed with a simple "cut and paste" approach, reducing research and development time, expense and risk.
