The first satellite IoT-NTN cellular module with GNSS capability solves the remote connectivity challenge

     U-blox has released the first 3GPP-compliant TN and NTN iot module, SARA-S528NM10. This standards-based module is a game changer for the satellite iot market as it supports global coverage with accurate, low power and concurrent positioning - essential attributes for use cases that require continuous or cyclic asset tracking and monitoring. Iot use cases include aftermarket telematics, industrial monitoring, smart metering and utilities, and fleet management.

     With cellular networks covering only 10% of the world, the need to guarantee global coverage is growing, especially for iot applications such as asset tracking in remote or Marine environments. Satellite iot Bridges this gap; Adoption is partially limited by the high cost of satellite terminals, high power consumption, and the high cost of satellite airtime. Current satellite connectivity solutions require proprietary hardware and software, which locks terminals to specific satellite operators - users need to change their satellite terminals to move to a different satellite operator. The u-blox solution, on the other hand, is based on the global 3GPP standard and can be interoperable with multiple satellite providers that support the standard, maximizing customer choice.

     "The new u-blox satellite IoT-NTN cellular module is designed to stay connected in areas without cellular coverage," explained Stephan Zizala, CEO of u-blox. "The integrated u-blox GNSS solution consumes less than 15mW of power in continuous tracking mode and has high RF sensitivity, reducing the time required to establish positioning. It provides concurrent location data without interrupting cellular or satellite connections, which further helps reduce power consumption due to reduced device activity times."

     The module is powered by the company's UBX-S52 cellular/satellite chipset and GNSS M10 platform, conforming to 3GPP Rel 17 NB-NTN specification. This standards-based approach ensures extended connectivity through LTE-M and NB-IoT on terrestrial cellular networks and NB-IoT on 3GPP Rel 17 compliant GEO satellite constellations, including readiness for LEO satellites. The cellular/satellite chipset is currently undergoing satellite network certification from Skylo, a global NTN service provider. The certification allows for seamless support for cellular and Skylo satellite connectivity, creating an improved, reliable experience that uses resources efficiently.

     The SARA-S528NM10 module supports all three new NTN bands - n23(US), n255 (L-Band Global) and n256 (S-Band Europe)- with improved and future technical certificates. It is compatible with the company's other SARA forms of pure cellular module pins, allowing engineers to easily scale their iot products using legacy technology without the need for expensive redesigns.
