STMicroelectronics introduces H3LIS331DL motion sensor

     STMicroelectronics introduces the world's first motion sensor capable of detecting ultra-high acceleration and low power consumption in three axes. Car traffic recorders (commonly known as black boxes), medical monitoring equipment, and sports equipment have very strict space and power consumption restrictions, and require detection components to accurately detect impact acceleration of up to 400 g. St's H3LIS331DL motion sensor is designed for these market needs.

     Most application devices do not need to detect high g impact acceleration. While most existing high-G impact detection solutions are based on single - or dual-axis high-power airbag sensors, ST's accelerometer is a battery-powered motion sensor that combines the benefits of high-precision 3D acceleration detection and ultra-low power consumption.

     With reduced power consumption and improved accuracy, high-impact detection devices will open up new opportunities for portable medical devices and sports equipment that can detect concussion symptoms in high-impact sports such as hockey, American football and auto racing. St's high-G sensors can also significantly improve the impact detection performance of automotive dash-recorders (black boxes) and cargo monitoring systems, enhancing the impact protection of consumer electronics.

     St's high-G accelerometers feature three-axis motion detection, allowing users to set the full range from ±100 g to ±400 g, with excellent time and temperature stability. The on-chip interface converts the acceleration data into a 12-bit stream and transmits it securely and reliably to a dedicated microcontroller through standard SPI or I2C communication protocols.

     The H3LIS331DL uses a new induction architecture that follows the low-power interface of ST's market-proven LIS331DLx acceleration sensor. Today, hundreds of millions of LIS331DLx units have been shipped.
