Qualcomm introduces single-chip 802.11n WLAN solutions for handsets and mobile devices
Qualcomm announced the launch of WCN1312, a single-chip, high-performance, 802.11N-compliant wireless local area network (WLAN) solution for handsets and mobile devices. This highly integrated terminal supports data transfer rates of up to 72 Mbps, significantly higher than previous 802.11a, b and g standard Wi-Fi solutions, enabling users to have a better experience when downloading data, watching streaming video or accessing the Internet.
"With the increasing demand for WLAN connectivity from handsets and other mobile devices, operators are turning to higher performance and more integrated solutions." Said Mike Concannon, senior vice president of connectivity and wireless modules in Qualcomm's CDMA Technology Group. "The new WCN1312 solution brings our customers an extremely compact 802.11n solution with leading performance and full system-level integration with other Qualcomm chipsets, minimizing design time and shortening manufacturers' time to market."
The WCN1312 solution is highly integrated with a wide range of features, including a 2.4GHz 802.11n baseband processor, media access controller, RF transceiver, transmission power amplifier, low noise amplifier, transmission switch, power coupler and RF bandpass filter. The WCN1312 has a package size of 7 x 7 mm. This simplified design eliminates many external RF transceiver components, minimizing the number of components and reducing system size.
The new WCN1312 chip uses low-power 65 nm CMOS technology and advanced power management technology to greatly reduce sleep, standby time and power consumption while operating. The chip is optimized for performance for Qualcomm's complete Mobile Station Modem (MSM) solution and supports multiple Mobile operating systems, including Qualcomm's Brew Mobile Platform, Android, and Windows Mobile. The WCN1312 chip is the industry's first mobile terminal to support both 1×1 and 1×2 dual receive configurations, improving coverage and data throughput when necessary. The WCN1312 solution also uses an advanced coexistence architecture and algorithms to optimize its performance when paired with Qualcomm Bluetooth ® solutions.
