Microchip Introduces New MCUS to Simplify low-power LCD application design
Microchip Technology, the world's leading provider of integrated microcontroller, mixed-signal, emulator and flash memory patented solutions, has introduced a new family of low-power microcontroller (MCU) products for driving liquid crystal displays (LCDS), integrating kern-independent peripherals (CIP) and intelligent simulation. The PIC16F19197 family of nine devices includes a battery-friendly LCD driven charge pump, a 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC2) with computing capabilities, a low-power comparator, and active clock tuning for a high-frequency oscillator. They are the first 8-bit MCU family optimized for the popular low-power, battery-powered, touch-enabled LCD applications.
The PIC16F19197 series devices range in pin count from 28 to 64, with flash memory up to 56 KB and RAM up to 4 KB. Its charge pump ensures that the LCD screen maintains a consistent contrast even when the battery voltage is reduced. The ADC2 automatically completes signal acquisition and processing tasks, making it easy to implement powerful touch buttons and sliders. In addition, active clock tuning helps customers ensure smooth operation of the oscillator over the entire voltage and temperature operating range. The new devices of the PIC16F19197 series can realize the above functions completely in the hardware environment without relying on software.
The family also includes a real-time Clock and calendar (RTCC) with battery backup and high-current I/O pins that directly drive the LCD backlight. In addition, it comes with low-power modes such as Idle/snooze and peripheral module Disable (PMD) functions to help extend battery life. At the same time, the new device can also drive up to 360 LCD segments. All of these features make the PIC16F19197 series ideal for battery-powered LCD applications.
"The introduction of the PIC16F19197 series simplifies the design of low-power LCD applications," said Steve Drehobl, Microchip's vice president of 8-bit MCUS. All of these new features can be set up in the MPLAB Code Configurator (MCC), which dramatically reduces development time and accelerates time-to-market."
