Lattice introduces HDMI 2.1 Enhanced Audio Return Channel solution

     Lattice Semiconductor Corporation announced the introduction of the Sil9437 and SiI9438, the first Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) audio receiver and transmitter to the HDMI 2.1 standard. eARC is a future-proof application that significantly improves home theater interconnection. This new, easy-to-use audio feature is part of the recently released HDMI2.1 specification. eARC technology was developed by the HDMIForum, which is comprised of more than 80 industry-leading consumer electronics companies.

     As a founder, contributor and adopter of the HDMI standard, Lattice continues to lead the market with the newly released HDMI2.1 product supporting eARC technology. eARC enables audio devices to work seamlessly with television sets. Device selection and volume control are controlled by the TV remote, requiring no additional manipulation of the audio device. eARC uses the two pins of the HDMI interface (the same pins that function as the HDMI Ethernet channel) to transmit low-jitter, high-bandwidth audio as well as two-way communication signals for audio function discovery and control. This is a great improvement over older TOSLINK and SPDIF audio outputs, which required separate cables and connectors and did not provide the communication support needed between audio devices and TVS.

We believe that the new capabilities enabled by eARC technology can provide consumers with an enhanced home theater experience." Audio content can now be delivered directly to listeners via a simpler TV and audio device interconnect, complete with incredible audio experiences such as Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DTS:X immersive audio and DTS-HD surround sound from streaming services.

     "HDMI has always been true to its two promises to consumers - one - to deliver the highest possible digital audio and video quality, and to simplify usage through automatic configuration," said MarshallGoldberg, marketing manager at Meredith Semiconductor. eARC technology is a big step forward in the home theater interconnect space as it is capable of delivering higher audio quality than TOSLINK or SPDIF without the need to switch through AVR devices. In addition, the new discovery function also guarantees the compatibility of products from different manufacturers when connected to the home theater system.
