Dialog extends battery life for continuously running connected devices

     Dialog Semiconductor, a provider of highly integrated power management, AC/DC power conversion, charging and Bluetooth low power technologies, announced the launch of two nanopower PMIC-DA9230 and DA9231 for the first time. The two new PMics are activated in the step-down circuit and consume only 750nA of total input current without load. They are the smallest PMIC in their category on the market today, helping continuously running iot applications achieve longer uptime and greater efficiency.

     According to IHS, the number of connected devices worldwide will grow by 12% per year from 2017 to 2030, and consumers are increasingly demanding efficiency, especially battery life and functionality. However, engineers face many challenges in balancing small size with the need for longer battery life, often resulting in inefficient power management of devices or limited battery capacity.

     Dialog's DA9230 and DA9231 will help common IoT devices such as wearables, smart door locks, portable medical devices and remote sensors to extend battery life and improve power efficiency. The two PMics consume only ultra-low static current, have high efficiency and high configurability to help improve battery life, and their ultra-small size is ideal for space-limited applications. One of the strongest features of the DA9230 and DA9231 is their size, which is the smallest on the market today compared to other chipsets in their category. Other PMIC single chips on the market either lack multiple power outputs and I2C configurability or have twice the footprint of Dialog's product.

     Designed to support current and future platforms, the DA9231 uses a 300mA buck circuit and a 100mALDO, and the DA9230 uses a separate buck circuit. The buck circuit of both devices has a minimum output voltage of 0.6V and can power advanced 14 - or 10-nanometer process SOCs. With a minimum supply voltage of 2.5V, both devices can also support upcoming silicon anode battery technology.
