Cypress introduces the industry's first USB-C HDMI Alt mode solution

     Cypress Semiconductor has announced the world's first complete USB-C to HDMI connectivity solution without an adapter or converter. The solution, based on the Cypress EZ-PD™USB-C controller, enables next-generation laptops, smartphones, tablets, digital cameras and other HDMI source devices equipped with USB-C connectors to connect directly to HDMI display devices, including HD and 4K TVS, using USB-C to HDMI cables. Currently, all Cypress EZ-PD controllers support USB Type-C™ HDMI Alt mode, USB Type-C audio, video and data protocol standards, and the USB PD standard for fast charging.

     All HD and 4K TVS come with HDMI ports, but if you want to connect non-HDMI source devices, you must use an adapter or converter, which does not support all native HDMI features. With the Cypress HDMI Alt Mode solution, source device manufacturers can fully leverage native HDMI capabilities via the USB Type-C interface.      The unmatched integration of Cypress EZ-PD CCG3 controllers minimizes material costs and simplifies design, replacing multiple discrete devices with a single chip solution. The Cypress EZ-PD USB-C controller family also includes the world's first programmable USB-C controller, the CCG1, the smallest programmable USB-C solution on the market, and the world's first dual-port USB-C solution, the CCG4. The EZ-PD series is the first product family to support the latest USB PD 3.0 standard, which will bring more robust end-to-end power transfer and charging solutions to laptops and mobile devices.

     The USB Type-C standard is rapidly gaining support from top electronics manufacturers because of its slim industrial design, easy-to-use connectors and cables, ability to transmit multiple protocols and up to 100W of power. The USB Type-C standard connector has a plug height of only 2.4mm, significantly less than the existing 4.5mm USB Type-A standard connector.
