Adaptive USB 2.0 signal conditioning IC saves power and simplifies system design

     Diodes Incorporated introduced the PI5USB212, a USB 2.0 signal regulator that drops from the supply voltage to 2.3V. The device is available in a 12-pin, 1.6mm x 1.6mm, four-flat leadless (QFN) package. It is suitable for laptops, PCS, docking stations, cable extenders, TVS and monitors to automatically detect USB 2.0 high-speed connections. It also maintains signal integrity when driving long PCB lines or cables up to 5 meters long.

     The IC symmetrically enhances the common mode stability of USB D+ and D-channels and applies pre-emphasis to compensate for inter-symbol interference (ISI). The wide supply voltage range simplifies system design and expands the operating window for portable and battery-powered devices.

     The device is configured to adjust signal boost and isi compensation levels using I2C commands or pin bundling. It has two control pins (boost/SEN); The AC gain/pre-emphasis level is controlled by pulling down the boost pin with different resistances. Depending on channel conditions, SEN pins select high, low, or medium receiver sensitivity (DC gain) to ensure optimal signal integrity. It automatically detects low speed (LS) mode/Full speed (FS) connections to avoid applying signal compensation when it is not needed.

     The device is compatible with USB 2.0, OTG 2.0, and BC (battery charging) 1.2, and supports USB features, including device attachment, high-speed detection, and 5.5V tolerance. It automatically detects when no USB attachment is present and saves energy by reducing its supply current to 0.7mA(typical) and 13 μA (typical) via the RSTN disable pin.
