Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH has released a motor control driver IC that implements a gate driver and a CPU core together with a comprehensive set of features and capabilities for more efficiently driving three-phase BLDC motors and PMSM. With a focus on performance, flexibility, and ease of integration, the TB9M003FG is the first device in the company's Smart Motor Control Driver (SmartMCD) family.

     Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH has released a motor control driver IC that implements a gate driver and CPU core, as well as a comprehensive set of features and functions to drive three-phase brushless DC motors and permanent magnet synchronous motors more efficiently. With a focus on performance, flexibility and easy integration, the TB9M003FG is the first product in the company's Smart Motor Control Driver (SmartMCD) family. Typical applications include electric pumps, fans, body control, and automotive thermal management systems.

     The SmartMCD TB9M003FG uses the company's advanced mixed-signal processing technology to combine an Arm Cortex-M0 CPU with a vector engine coprocessor and predriver to control an external B6 n-channel MOSFETs. This level of integration is packaged in a 9mm × 9mm HTQFP48 thermal enhanced package, allowing smaller, simpler and lower cost 30-1000W brushless DC motor systems. The device connects directly to the battery and the LIN bus, which has a built-in wake-up function for energy-efficient operation and communication.

     The vector engine coprocessor enables precise field-oriented control, which is essential for effective motor control, especially in applications that require precise positioning, torque or speed control. It speeds up the necessary math operations and reduces the load on the CPU. High-speed PWM frequencies and advanced control algorithms contribute to smooth and quiet operation, reducing vibration and noise. Features such as single shunt sensorless measurement, reduced component counts, and smaller program code sizes help reduce overall system costs.

     AEC-Q100(Class 0) qualified devices operate in a temperature range (Ta) from -40 ° C to +150 ° C, ensuring reliability in harsh automotive environments. SmartMCD integrates current limiter, overcurrent, VBAT overvoltage and overtemperature protection circuits, as well as fault detection for undervoltage, external power MOSFET on/short failure, and overheating. This eliminates the need for several external circuits, further reducing system costs and saving space and design effort.

     The SmartMCD Motor Studio PC tool allows for simple parameter configuration, drive control, real-time recording and diagnostics via high-speed UART. Together with MIKROE's SmartMCD TB9M003FG board, it enables quick and easy system evaluation and BLDC motor application development and prototyping. Flexible licensing options for device development tools and software libraries make it easier for developers to access and apply the full functionality of a motor control system.
