Space-level planar transformers have a smaller size and higher density than conventional equipment

     Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. has introduced a new line of low-profile, space-grade planar transformers for power conversion applications. Offering lower cost, smaller size and higher density than conventional flat transformers, the customizable Vishay Custom Magnetics SGTPL-2516 series devices meet MIL-STD-981 Class S requirements.

     Available in through-hole terminals and a variety of package sizes, the device will be used in SMPS, DC-DC, and AC/DC converters. Designed for the harshest environments, the transformer combines MIL-STD-981 certification and rugged packaging with moulded windings and +130C high temperature operation. The SGTPL-2516 series devices operate in the frequency range of 80kHz to 300kHz and provide high dielectric voltage resistance up to 1500VAC, with a power of 150W and a leakage inductance of 0.5µH.

    Offering a unique winding structure and construction technology, the transformer offers a higher copper fill factor than traditional flat devices, resulting in a smaller package size and improved efficiency and power density. The series' winding technology allows for easy modification to meet the needs of a design specific operating voltage, inductance, power, package size and height without the need for upfront tooling costs. In addition to Class S MIL-STD-981 Group A and Group B screening, the device can also be used to design P-level screening for validation tests and other custom screening options.
