Software for motor drive development supports faster time to market
Toshiba Electronics Europe has updated and expanded the design framework for its BLDC and Permanent Magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drivers, adding new features that automatically capture motor parameters and simplify optimization Settings. By alleviating these notoriously tricky challenges when starting a new project, the latest tools accelerate application development and reduce time to market for energy-efficient variable speed drives.
To help optimize FOC Settings, the latest version of Toshiba MCU Motor Studio (MMS v3.0) introduces a new technology for estimating rotor position based on flux observations. Flux observers combine the estimated alpha and beta axis flux components to calculate the rotor electrical position and reduce the complexity of the initial PI gain setup, unlike traditional position estimation methods used in PI control loops. This enables users to make rapid progress in developing motor applications.
Along with MMS 3.0, the company also released a new tool, the Motor Tuning Studio (MTS v1.0), which simplifies capturing motor and drive control parameters. MTS includes firmware loaded on the motor MCU and accompanying PC-based tools. Firmware calculates rotor resistance, d/q axis inductance, moment of inertia, and magnetic flux. Designed for the company's TMPM4K and TMPM3H MCUS, it also supports software vector control in normal motor drive operation.
The accompanying MTS PC tool handles flux observation and calculates PI gain parameters for current control, velocity control, and position estimation. It creates a C header file containing these tuning parameters and generates the XML initialization file required for motor evaluation and drive development using MMS 3.0.
To accelerate drive development with the latest tools, the company partnered with MikroElektronika to provide cost-effective Clicker 4 for TMPM4K boards and Clicker 4 and inverter shielding for TMPM3H boards. The kit includes a compact development board and inverter shielding for TMPM4K or TMPM3H MCUS. It does not require additional hardware to connect to the sensorless motor and start evaluating.
