Microchip launches a new family of microcontrollers offering multiple independent closed-loop power channels and system management capabilities

Microchip Technology has announced the release of its new PIC16(L)F1769 series 8-bit PIC microcontroller (MCU) products. The series is the first PIC MCU to offer up to two independent closed-loop channels.

     Microchip Technology announced the release of its new PIC16(L)F1769 series 8-bit PIC microcontroller (MCU) products. The series is the first PIC MCU to offer up to two independent closed-loop channels. This is achieved through the addition of a programmable ramp generator (PRG) that automatically realizes slope and compensates for slope, increasing the stability and efficiency of hybrid power conversion applications. In addition, PRG can respond to system changes in real time, as fast as nanoseconds, without the need for the CPU to interact with multiple independent power channels. This allows customers to reduce latency and component counts while improving system efficiency.

     The PIC16(L)F1769 series integrates several intelligent analog and digital peripherals, including tri-state operational amplifiers, 10-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), 5-bit and 10-bit digital-to-analog converters (Dacs), 10-bit and 16-bit PWM, high-speed comparators, and two 100 mA high-current I/ OS. Together, these integrated peripherals help support the need for multiple independent closed-loop power channels and system management, and provide an 8-bit platform for simplified design that helps eliminate the many discrete components in power conversion systems while achieving greater efficiency and improved performance.

     In addition to the power conversion peripherals, the new PIC MCU has a unique hardware-based LED dimming control function, which is enabled by the interconnect of a data signal modulator (DSM), an operational amplifier, and a 16-bit PWM. These peripherals combine to create an LED dimming engine that enables synchronous switching control and eliminates LED current overshoot and attenuation. The synchronization of the output switch helps smooth dimming, minimize color drift, extend the life of the LED and reduce heat.

     The family also has several kernel-independent peripherals (CIPs), such as configurable logic units (CLCS), complementary output generators (COG), and zero-cross detection (ZCD). These CIPs take 8-bit PIC MCUS to a new level of performance and are designed to handle tasks and maintain operations without code or CPU oversight after initial configuration. As a result, they simplify the implementation of complex control systems, enabling designers to innovate flexibly.

     At the same time, CLC peripherals enable designers to create custom logic and interconnections for specific applications, reducing interrupt latency, saving code space and increasing functionality. COG peripheral is a powerful waveform generator capable of generating complementary waveforms and fine control of key parameters such as phase, dead zone, blanking, emergency shutdown state and error recovery strategy. It provides a cost-effective solution that saves board space and reduces component costs. In addition, the ZCD detects zero crossing of high-voltage AC signals, making it ideal for TRIAC control functions.

     These new 8-bit PIC MCUS provide multiple independent closed-loop power channels and system management capabilities for a variety of power supplies, battery management, LED lighting, automotive interior and exterior lighting, and general purpose applications. In addition, the new product family offers EUSART, I2C™/ SPI, and ultra-low power consumption (XLP) technologies, and each product is available in a small 14-20 pin package.

     "The real power of the PIC16F1769 series is the ability to interconnect on-chip peripherals to create custom functionality for specific applications," said Steve Drehobl, vice president of Microchip's MCU8 division. Combined with the ability to control independent closed-loop channels at the same time, the capabilities of the new product go far beyond traditional low-cost 8-bit PIC MCUS."
