Melexis introduces an absolute magnetic encoder IC

     Melexis introduces the MLX90382, an absolute magnetic encoder IC. The device has a compact size, resists stray fields, supports on-axis and off-axis sensing, and enables seamless integration, including into micromotors. With 14-bit resolution, differential output and a speed range of up to 200k e-RPM, it is ideal for industrial automation, robotics and mobility solutions. The product is available now and is supported by a comprehensive evaluation suite to facilitate a streamlined development process.

     As the use of robotics and automation solutions expands, transitioning from specialized high-end applications to a wider range of applications, so does the need for cost-effective and accurate encoders that provide the necessary motion feedback in these systems. High-speed encoder feedback ensures proper functionality and safety for motor drive applications such as robotic arms, automated packaging machines and industrial looms.

     The device is a magnetic position sensor IC that combines a Hall magnetic front end, ADC, zero-delay on-chip digital signal processing, and multiple output drivers. The device incorporates the latest advances in Melexis Triaxis technology, bringing its expertise in magnetic position sensing to high-speed encoder devices. The device measures the differential magnetic field on the Z-axis By detecting three components of the flux density (Bx, BY and Bz) to achieve accurate tracking of the absolute angular position and velocity. It can reach speeds of up to 200,000 rpm and has a stray field immunity of up to 4kA/m of 3600.

     The device helps overcome typical assembly challenges associated with complex motor drive applications, offering ease of on-shaft and off-shaft installation. This allows the IC to support hollow shaft applications, allowing the wiring loom or other components to pass through the shaft without compromising encoder feedback - eliminating some design complexity and driving innovation.

     The device is a compact, RoHS-compliant, single-chip 4mm x 4mm2 QFN-24 that supports 5V and 3.3V applications. Both models are AEC-Q100 (Class 0) qualified, ensuring reliability. In addition, the on-shaft configuration supports safety standards integrated with SIL2.

     The device offers five different output modes and is designed to serve a variety of applications. These components include an industry-standard differential ABI/UVW interface for incremental Angle output, a UVW signal simulation typically used for brushless DC motors, a PWM interface, and configurable SPI and SSI interfaces. The sensor operates over a wide temperature range of -40 ° C to 150 ° C, making it ideal for harsh environments.
