Infineon introduces high voltage resonant controllers with PFC functionality

     With the introduction of the ICL5101, Infineon Technologies has expanded its portfolio of control ics for lighting systems from 40W to 300W. The new high voltage resonant control IC ICL5101 is highly integrated, helping to reduce system costs. Typical applications include: indoor and outdoor LED lighting, high/low shed lighting, street lighting, parking and ceiling lighting, office lighting, retail and store lighting. The total cost of ownership of a lighting system is an important consideration for industrial lighting, and the new ICL5101 supports a resonant topological efficiency of up to 95%, which is why it is favored by customers.

     The highly integrated ICL5101 enables the high-end design of LED drivers, requiring approximately 25% fewer components than similar solutions that require both a separate PFC IC and a resonant IC. This makes the design more reliable, which reduces the shape size, simplifies the PCB layout, and reduces costs. The ICL5101 integrates a half-bridge and PFC gate driver. All operating parameters of the IC can be adjusted by a simple resistor, thus reducing costs and ensuring the reliability and stability of parameter Settings. The chip junction temperature range is -40°C to +125°C, suitable for outdoor use.

     The LED controller ICL5101 is designed to control resonant topologies such as LLC. The integrated digital PFC unit operates in both critical on-mode (CrCM) and discontinuous on-mode (DCM), allowing for extremely stable regulation under low load conditions such as darkening of the unit. LED lighting brightness can be adjusted over a wide range of 100% to 0.1% of its rated load. The range of the latest dimming technologies available on the market is generally only 100% to 5%. In addition, the ICL5101 can be lit for a very short time (less than 200 ms) under any conditions.

     The ICL5101 adjustable PFC unit enables lighting manufacturers to meet energy efficiency standards by delivering high-quality power over a wide input voltage range with a real THD of less than 10% and a power factor of more than 0.99. In addition, the ICL5101 ensures extremely stable output when the input voltage changes. A series of protection features such as external overtemperature protection and capacitive load protection ensure timely detection of fault states and improve system security.
