Infineon and HELla create new RF components for radar sensors
Infineon Technologies AG and German auto parts supplier Hella Group have developed an innovative RF component for radar sensors that effectively monitors blind spots (blind spot detection) in the rear of a vehicle. The module integrates several previously separate components into a single transceiver (with both transceiver functions), saving space and cost, as well as providing better performance and lower power consumption. Thanks to mass production brought about by increased efficiency, driver assistance systems can now also be popularized in mid - to low-end models.
Hella's 24GHz radar sensor system for blind spot detection is extremely accurate. Regardless of the direction and speed of the object, even in bad weather conditions, continuous radar scanning enables accurate detection of moving objects, and its further optimized antenna helps achieve greater measurement accuracy. For example, when overtaking or changing lanes, the system will warn vehicles coming from behind. When parked, the radar can detect the situation behind the vehicle to avoid a collision.
Infineon's new monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) from the BGT24Axx chip family is a key component in driver assistance systems that help increase system efficiency. They further improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), ensuring higher accuracy in detecting and signaling dead zone objects. As a fully integrated transceiver, the Infinion MMIC contains all high-frequency components, such as a crystal oscillator, a transmission amplifier and a receiving branch with a low noise amplifier and an I/Q mixer. As a result, Hella's radar system is smaller, cheaper and consumes less power. Infineon's 24GHz chip family further enables customized hardware configurations based on the system environment and application scenarios.
With a 24GHz radar system that controls the rear blind area of the vehicle, Hella and Infineon bring an efficient and reliable product to the automotive market. The number of radar-based driver assistance systems installed worldwide will grow from approximately 14 million today to more than 40 million by 2020, with blind spot detection systems playing a key role (Strategy Analytics 2013). Hella's third-generation radar module will be mass-produced from now on and can be used as an optional device for any vehicle model, including mid - to low-end models.
