Cypress introduces a new highly integrated controller
Cypress Semiconductor, a leader in the USB-C market, has announced a new USB-C controller that supports power transmission (PD) and simplifies the design of power adapters, phone chargers, car chargers and mobile power supplies. The Cypress EZ-PD™ CCG3PA controller supports the PD 3.0 standard that combines Programmable Power supply (PPS) and Qualcomm Quick Charge (QC) 4.0 protocols, enabling new power product designs to deliver an optimized fast charging experience.
As these technical standards and the USB Type-C standard continue to evolve, compatibility and interoperability will be a constant challenge, and the programmable CCG3PA controller can be upgraded with firmware to keep up with changes and address interoperability issues. The controller's high level of integration significantly reduces material costs and simplifies design, replacing multiple discrete devices with a single chip solution.

EZ-PD CCG3PA controller is a single chip solution, Integrated error amplifiers for constant voltage, constant current, and PPS applications, 30 V regulators allowing direct VBus operation, VBus short circuit protection on configuration channel (CC) pins, and high voltage power FETs The grid drivers, low side current detection amplifiers, dedicated hardware for traditional charger detection protocols, and system-level electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection minimize material costs for USB-C power products. Programmable overvoltage and overcurrent circuits protect the system from power overload and other misoperations. It also integrates ARM® Cortex-M0 and 64KB Flash, and reads and writes simultaneously at the time of the firmware upgrade. In addition, this product facilitates the design of efficient USB-C power adapters for a wide range of applications such as mobile phones and personal computers.
