     Atmel Corporation has released the industry's most innovative single-wire EEPROM product, which requires only two pins, one data pin and one ground pin, to work properly. The range is ideal for the Internet of Things (IoT), wearables, consumables, batteries and cable signage markets. Because the new device product is self-powered, it does not use a power supply or Vcc pin, but adopts a parasitic power supply scheme via a data pin. This family of devices offers the best ultra-low power performance in its class with standby current of 700nA, write current of 200µA and read current of 80µA at 25 ° C, which is only one-third of the leading competitors.

     Small iot, wearables, battery and cable signage applications are limited in space, and Atmel's ATM1CS01/11 device implements a parasitic power supply solution through a single data pin, completely eliminating the dependence on external capacitors and rectifier tubes. In addition, the new device has ultra-high write durability, with each memory location capable of writing more than 1 million cycles, meeting today's requirements for high write durability applications.

     The ATM1CS01/11 product has a simple product identification feature that attaches a plug and play 64-bit unique serial number to each device. As such, the product is ideal for smart connected devices in today's iot world, including wearables such as smart health bands and medical devices. These devices also provide an industry-leading electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection rating (compliant with IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 ESD rating) to help cables, wearables, and more to protect themselves from the outside environment or human contact and maintain their flawless performance.

     Padam Singh, Director of Memory Product Marketing at Atmel, said: "Atmel has always been rooted in the memory space, and we are excited to introduce a new generation of innovative true 2-pin serial EPROM memory products with parasitic power solutions. Our new single-wire EEPROM family makes it very easy to add serial EEPROM memory and takes up only one MCU/MPU pin, eliminating the need for a Vcc lead for the device, significantly saving board space and simplifying layout. In addition, this plug-and-play 64-bit serial number is the easiest way to add identification to a variety of accessories and consumables. We hope to extend these products into the next generation of applications, providing a variety of value-added and industry-first solutions."

     The new device follows the I2C communication protocol and can be easily ported from an existing EEPROM with less overhead and capacity, allowing up to eight devices to be connected on the same bus. The AT21CS01 device provides a secure register and 64-bit original programmed sequence number, plus 16 bytes of user-programmable and permanently lockable storage, providing a unique secure sequence number that can be used for inventory tracking, asset marking, and permanent data protection when needed.

     The product is available in two versions with different voltage requirements. The Atmel AT21CS01 is designed for low voltage applications with operating voltages between 1.7V and 3.6V. For applications requiring a higher voltage range, such as lithium polymer batteries, the AT21CS11 will be able to support 2.7V-4.5V operating voltages, making it ideal for meeting IEEE1725 battery electronic identification specifications.
