Ams releases an integrated power management unit
Ams announces an integrated power management unit, the AS3701. The device has a very small footprint, making it ideal for use in wearables and other space-constrained devices.The AS3701 is a chip scale package (WL-CSP) miniature PMIC with low static current, multiple power output, power saving, battery charging, battery protection and start-up functions in one package, measuring 2mm x 2mm x 0.4mm.
With the AS3701, power system designers can save board space and provide advanced power management capabilities for single-Li-ion battery-powered products such as smartwatches, sports wristbands, wearable medical devices, handheld GPS, and mobile phones.
The AS3701's power output consists of two 200mA low-voltage differential linear regulators (Ldos), a 500mA step-down DC-DC converter, and two 40mA (maximum) programmable current traps. With switching frequencies up to 4M Hz, synchronous buck converters require only a small sensor and a 10µF output capacitor.
The Micro PMIC's integrated lithium battery charger is capable of operating in trickle, constant current, and constant voltage modes and provides a maximum charge current of 500mA. The power path management function enables the device to turn on immediately when the charger is inserted in the case of battery depletion, and optimizes the power distribution of the battery charging circuit and the system supply circuit.
Many applications can be configured with the AS3701 through the I2C interface of the main processor or microcontroller. The device also includes a multifunctional I/O interface for power on/off, PWM input and output, and interrupt and control tasks in standby mode.
With OTP(Programmable memory at once), designers can flexibly implement the power-on timing required for different processors or different applications. This means Oems can use the same power solution across multiple end product designs, effectively simplifying design development and integration.
The device also integrates the functions of battery temperature monitoring, power-on reset, and overcurrent protection to ensure the reliability and safety of operation.
